The brief
During 2007, some major organisational 
upheaval and re-structuring occurred within Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (TWoA). From mid 2008, The Learning Wave have worked with leaders within TWoA to develop a highly customised, culturally appropriate 360 feedback tool and process to help the leaders and managers within TWoA become more effective in their roles.
The solution
Each manager invites feedback on their performance from their boss[es], peers and staff using an on-line 360 tool that produces a comprehensive feedback report. This report then forms the basis for a number of one-on-one facilitated developmental coaching sessions, where the manager is able to develop their own professional development action plan.
This facilitated approach provides:
- The manager with private access to an online survey and gives survey results that are used to guide discussions in the coaching session
- Detailed feedback and integration of views across different roles on where a manager could place more or less emphasis within a range of key management and leadership practices
- Guidelines, strategies and coaching to help managers make adjustments to their behaviours as necessary
- Information to underpin continues professional development of managers
This has been piloted with over 30 managers and leaders and has become a ‘business as usual’ initiative to be rolled out to over 150 managers throughout New Zealand during 2010.
The result
Te Wānanga o Aotearoa are delighted that this approach has enabled them to:
- Provide a pathway for continuous learning for managers through more or less emphasis on key management and leadership practices
- Engage with managers who now are now more willing and able to foster and support change
- Develop professional practices as both leaders and managers
- Align manager growth to achievement of TWoA organisational goals
- Improve learning experiences through enhanced service leadership and management practices
