Giving back...

At The Learning Wave we believe in giving back to the community. Here is a programme we were recently involved in.

The brief

The Learning Wave was contacted by a client wearing his charitable trust hat, who asked if we would like to be involved in working with Genesis Youth Trust. After a bit of research and meeting the team, we became very excited about the opportunity. The Trust was established in 2002 with the goal of workingGenesis-1.jpg with youth offenders and youth at risk, who are involved in, or on the fringe of, youth gangs, to bring about positive lifestyle change away from a life of offending. They are also involved in running large events such as family days, youth expo’s, and programmes in schools with positive themes such as connecting families with their community, anti-bullying, and anti-gang messages. If that wasn’t enough, Genesis also run a Parenting Programme for youth offenders and their families.

Since 2002, the project team has developed into a multidisciplinary team who have done some fantastic work in the community. With the personalities involved and the line of work they do, motivation is not a major issue, however this group is always looking for improvement in how they can function more effectively as a team. Our brief was to deliver a range of ½ day leadership and communication toolbox sessions that would create an even better functioning team to deliver an even better service to the community.

The solution

After consultation with the managers and the team members themselves, The Learning Wave was able to come up with a ‘Leadership Suite’ comprising six 4-hour Modules that would be delivered by a range of Associates over six months.

The result

Following the first session, we had two very excited Associates come back to the office and rave about what a great day THEY had had. More importantly, we also had a very happy group from Genesis Youth Trust who had been inspired and had taken on some very valuable new tools. We are still in the midst of delivering this programme to Genesis Youth Trust and expect to have some more great feedback at the end of the Leadership Suite.

Rob Woodley, Youth & Community Sergeant in Charge, Genesis Youth Trust, says: “Your team did a FANTASTIC JOB at the session, inspiring and motivating the Genesis team while facilitating a greater appreciation of each other’s leadership & communication styles…Your facilitators were awesome and did a great job getting 15 leaders to pay attention, and actively participate, as we are made up of predominantly “yellow” (show pony) & “red” (it’s my way or the highway) communicators. What we learnt from that workshop (and future workshops) as a team will permeate all of our programmes, events, and services to youth at risk, their families, and the community.”
