March 2011

To be competitive we have to invest in lifelong learning.

"Knowledge and human power are synonymous!"

Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626)

The Internet has revolutionised the average person’s ability to seek and gain knowledge …and at the same time, it has also led to a lot of confusion!  Information overload doesn’t necessarily make us more competitive or give us more power as human beings.

The real challenge is to find the information that truly enhances our competitiveness and to apply and use this information.  It’s about information and application.

In our latest Learning Cafe survey, only 54% of NZ business leaders told us that they will invest more than 2% of payroll on learning and development in the next year. The remaining 46% will invest less than 2% of their payroll.  One global benchmark of best practice is to spend 4% of payroll.  Where will this gap in investment leave New Zealand and it’s workforce?  Without the skills, knowledge and motivation to develop themselves, we run the risk of seriously eroding our ability to compete in the global economy.

The right learning and development, at the right time, provides big payoffs for employers in increased productivity, knowledge, engagement, and contribution.

So, please take a few minutes and join us for this month's virtual coffee at The Learning Cafe to:

  • Indulge in double shots - new insights and ideas about business and learning
